Child's Chemise

This
pattern is for a simple yoked chemise suitable for a child up to the age
of about 6. When they were very young, both boys and girls wore
undergarments that were very similar. It wasn’t until after a boy was
potty trained and moved into pants, “breached”, that their
undergarments changed. The major difference between a young boys and a
young girls undershirt was the length. Young boys undershirts were shorter
and often buttoned onto their drawers. Young girls chemises came to just
around the knees.
This pattern is done with
the raglan sleeve style which makes it very comfortable for the children
to wear. As
children grow very fast, Mom’s would often make their garments too big
and use growth tucks to reduce the length until it was needed.
Suggestions are included for several methods of finishing the
hemline.

pattern is for a yoked chemise suitable for a girl

teen.
It is an easy simple garment to sew and one that is comfortable to
wear.
Room has been built into the armseye to aid in comfort and fit.
It
has capped sleeves like the adult versions. Placement of the gathers
allows for development of the bust line. As children

Child's Drawers
Both boys and girls of the Era wore drawers. The only difference between the drawers of little boys and little girls was the amount of decorations around the hemline. Children’s drawers buttoned on both sides and often the little boys had drawer bodies (a loose undershirt-like garment) that buttoned to the waistband. Unlike adult drawers, children’s drawers had sewn crotches. This pattern is for drawers suitable for boys and girls to around the age of 6. The pattern is for a waistband that buttons at both sides, but instructions are included for a drawstring waistband and for an elastic casing. Elastic cloth had been patented in 1820 and was in use during the Civil War, however it was not used for undergarments. Elastic waistbands are, however, an easy way for most Mom's to make garments that are easy to fit and last several seasons. Drawers usually were mid-calf in length and can be seen in pictures peeking out beneath the little girls dresses. Suggestions are given for several different methods of finishing off the lower edges of your drawers. If you make your drawers mid-calf length, you can purchase cotton knee-hi’s (trouser socks) in white or black, and the bottom of the drawers will comedown over the top of the socks. This is a great way to get a period “illusion” without the hassles of stockings and garters. The kid’s love it.

Girls Drawers
This pattern is for drawers or pantalets, as they were also called, for a girl from age 7 to the teens. The pattern is for split-crotched drawers but the seam can be closed if you choose. The split-crotch makes going to the “necessary” a whole lot easier, as these drawers are worn under everything else. The waistband is fastened using a drawstring and casing but it can be replaced with a fitted waistband, if desired. Several trim options are included for the lower edge of your drawers. A TRIM TRICK is included which makes these trim options very easy to do. As children grow rapidly, it is suggested you make the drawers, too big and use growth tucks to reduce their length until needed.

This pattern is for a wonderful easy to make and fit blouse called a
“guimpe”. These
bodies or as we know them today blouses appeared in all the fashion
magazines of the Era. They
were worn under all types of garments, from open-necked dresses to Swiss
Bodies, vests and the Zonal waists and Brettelles (braces) that were so
popular with the young people.
Mothers liked them, because it was much easier to wash a blouse than
to launder a whole dress.
This blouse serves as a great wardrobe extender when worn with a
skirt and a pretty belt and braces.
The blouse is styled in the peasant style, with diagonal armseye,
similar to a modern raglan sleeve.
This makes the garment easy to fit and wonderfully comfortable to
wear. The
looseness of this garment is also great for the growing child, as the lack
of a fitted shoulder gives lots of growth room.
The pattern is for a blouse that gathers at the neckline and the
cuffs. The blouse
can be dressed up by adding a row of lace around the neck. The blouse is
closed at the center back with either a keyhole opening or buttons and
buttonholes.

dress is designed to grow with your young lady.
The bodice has a wide, slightly gathered,
neckline, which can be adjusted as the girl develops.
The skirt is designed in tiers, allowing for lengthening and
additions as required. For younger girls the
two-tiered option
works well. The
skirt has a drawstring back, hidden under the Medici belt,
which allows for waist increases.
As the mother of a young lady, I planned this pattern with growth in
mind. Children’s
clothes are expensive enough, without having to sew new outfits each year.
The outfit can be dressed up or down as the occasion requires.

a military style (replicating that of the soldiers), a high button
vest and a V-necked mid-height vest. Optional welt pockets can be added, if

This pattern is for button fly trousers that were worn for most of the 19th
century. There
are two options for the back of the trouser:
the standard straight “civilian” back and the placket insert
style back that is similar to the military pants. There are two styles of
waistband available as well. The standard one-piece style and the two-piece
style with the eyelets in the back, which allows for growth in the trousers
at the waist. The
pockets are the basic side pockets that were used for both military and
civilian styles. These
trousers are designed to fit in the period style, with the waistband being
higher than the waistbands of today.
I have also included a simple pattern for a pair of button-style
braces, to help hold the trousers up.
