Wrap Bodice
from Timeless Stitches

This pattern is for a simple but dressy bodice that combines many of the features of bodices of the Era.  The bodice is not tight fitting; instead it utilizes small pleats along the waistline to give it shape and structure.  This is a great bodice to start your Civil War sewing, as it is one of the easiest to make and fit, while giving you the basic sewing techniques for garments of the Era.    The bodice is designed so it can either be tucked into your skirt or placed on a waistband that is worn inside your skirt.  The Bodice also has two collar options a smooth shawl collar or a “revers” or fold over collar. Both can be trimmed with laces, ruffles or handwork, many ideas for which are included in this pattern.  The modified pagoda sleeves can be made in either of the two options: cuffs or plain. The bodice is designed to be worn with detachable collar and sleeve “jockeys.” The pattern includes a pattern for the insert for the neckline.   While simple to sew, this is one of the most flattering and easily adaptable bodices.    When combined with a Timeless Stitches skirt, this pattern makes a perfect outfit. Try TSS-201 Double Opening Skirt, TSS-202 Gauged Skirt or TSS-203 Gored Skirt.   TSS-206 Split Skirt with underskirt and this bodice make a wonderful dressy outfit for a party.  It is the perfect outfit for  teenage ball gowns.  The “P” after the number indicates plus sized pattern

Basque Bodice

Timeless Stitches
The definition of a Basque Bodice is a bodice that extends below the waist, over the skirt. Empress Eugenie of France made this Basque style popular.    In 1858 she ordered 25 of these garments in many fabric choices.  The bodice is not tight fitting, like most of the bodices worn; it utilizes pleats or gathers and fabric belts to give it shape at the waistline. This makes this garment more comfortable to wear than many of the tight-fitting bodices.  Options are included in the pattern for three styles of edging: pleated, ruffled and a fabric runching, as well as an optional pelerine.  This pelerine hooks onto the neckline for a second look giving this garment a nice versatility.  The purpose of a Basque bodice would depend on the fabric chosen.  Basques made of light, airy, solid and print cottons could be worn as morning and at-home attire, as well as fancy day dresses. Basques made of heavier cottons, silks, linens, wools and brocades would be used for day dresses, visiting garments, traveling attire and for riding habits   Many Basque style bodices were combined with skirts for a complete outfit. Try TSS-201 Double Opening Skirt, TSS-202 Gauged Skirt or TSS-203 Gored Skirt.  This was the forerunner of the suit.  Done in a cream or soft pastel, this would be a great bodice for a late afternoon or dinner wedding.  The “P” after the number indicates plus sized pattern

Swiss Body

TimelessStitches        A Swiss Body is basically a jacket without sleeves.  Swiss Bodies and other “waists” were very popular because they extended a Ladies wardrobe.  The addition of a Swiss Body and blouse to your wardrobe gives you many new “outfit” choices. Swiss Bodies were worn for everything from traveling to evening wear depending on the fabric from which it was made.  Swiss Bodies are very comfortable to wear as they give free movement, unlike the tight fitted bodices.   On warm summer days a light garibaldi blouse or tucked body and a cotton Swiss Body make a wonderful cool outfit.  Ladies of the Era always wanted to make a statement either in their “coming,” the front, or their “going,” the rear.  This Body definitely gives a nice rear view, as it has a sassy peplum back with an optional belt.   Suggested Associated  Timeless Stitches Patterns:  The Gored skirt  TSS- 203 works well with this garment, as the tailored effect of the skirt and the fitted effect of the Body compliment each other.  The Tucked Body TSB- 120 works great underneath.  The “P” after the number indicates plus sized pattern

Sleeveless Jacket (Vest)

Timeless Stitches
A great beginner pattern!  Practice those needlecraft skills!  Ladies of the 1860’s used vests to show off their stitchery skills often spending hours on intricate detail and designs.  Vests were worn over a simple skirt and body to complete the outfit or under open front jackets such as the Zouave.  Vests  were not only made of  the same fabric as a skirt and jacket , but were often made in a complimentary color to match the trim.  This pattern offers a simple sleeveless jacket.  It is joined in the front with loops and buttons or optional braid frogs can be used. This garment is not as form fitting as some vests and thus easy to fit. This is a great beginner pattern and a good garment to practice those braid work or handiwork skill on.  The pattern requires just a yard of fabric so is reasonable for some of those expensive brocades and velvets we all would love to own.    Sizing: The pattern includes four general sizes: Small, Medium, Large and X-large. Complimentary Patterns:   This is a great pattern to go under Timeless Stitches Zouave Jacket TSB-105 and over Timeless Stitches pattern TSB-120 Tucked Body. The Sleeveless Jacket can be combined with any of the Timeless Stitches skirt patterns (try TSS-103 The Gored Skirt) to make a very comfortable outfit, add a short cape (Timeless Stitches TSO-401 Multi-length Cape) for a complete look.

Gathered Body (Blouse) - Guimpe

Timeless Sitiches
This pattern is for a wonderful easy to make and fit blouse called a “guimpe”.  These bodies or as we know them today blouses appeared in all the fashion magazines of the Era.  They were worn under all types of garments, from open-necked dresses to Swiss Bodies, vests and the Zonal waists.  The blouse is styled in the peasant style, with diagonal armseye, similar to a modern raglan sleeve.  This makes the garment easy to fit and wonderfully comfortable to wear.  The pattern is for a blouse that gathers at the neckline and the cuffs.  The blouse can be dressed up by adding a row of lace around the neck and cuffs. The blouse is closed at the center back with either a keyhole opening or buttons and buttonholes.    This Guimpe is the perfect companion to Timeless Stitches TSB-110 Swiss Body, TSB-109 Basque Bodice and a great blouse to wear under TSB-105 Zouave Jackets.   The “P” after the number indicates plus sized pattern

Basic Ballgown Bodice

Timeless Stitches
Of all the garments you will make from the Civil War Era, the ballgown has the least number of restrictions.  The neck-line can be high or low, with or without ruffles.  The gown can have any number of sleeve options.  The style and design was guided more by the wearer and her style than by convention.    This Basic Ballgown bodice has all the features of the bodices of the Era:  the princess line and the boning allow for a tight,       close-fitting garment ,   shoulder seams fall to the back of the shoulder  to      help emphasize the width of the shoulders ,   the side seams are to the back to help give the illusion of a smaller waist ,  the bodice ends in a point at both the front and the back ,  the bodice closes with eyelet and laces down the  center back,  the bodice is finished at the neck edge and the  lower edge with piping   This pattern is designed on the principle of making a very simple ballgown and adding options over time, to adapt and change the look of your gown for many different occasions, and many years of wear. This ballgown bodice when combined with one of Timeless Stitches skirt patterns (look for Standard Double Opening Skirt TSS-201, The Gauged Skirt TSS-202,  Gored Skirt TSS-203) will make a wonderful, easy to adapt, garment.  Timeless Stitches also offers TSS-206 which is a pattern for making a skirt with a ruffled underskirt, and TSS-207 which is a scalloped ballgown skirt.  These patterns are great if you want a fancier skirt.  This pattern includes options for a round or a sweetheart neckline, as well as a Bertha style collar, lappets and coordinating center front panel,  a chemisette lace trim at neckline, a ruffled neckline, as well as many trim ideas including beadwork.    Timeless Stitches also offers patterns which have been designed to compliment this pattern.  They are: TSB-131 Berthas that can be added to your basic bodice and  a selection of sleeve options TSB-132, which can be stitched to your bodice after completion, or during sewing.  TSS-205 is an overskirt pattern designed to top any of the basic skirts.

Ballgown Berthas

Timeless Stitches
Berthas were one of the most popular accessories during the Civil War Era.  There is not another garment that could change the look of an outfit as easily as the Bertha.  This gave women the chance to appear “new” and “fresh” at different occasions, without the expense of a completely new outfit.  Godey’s Magazine routinely showed new ideas for Bertha’s, often calling them bertha.  Mary Lincoln spent $500 on a  Lace Bertha she is pictured wearing on several occasions.  This pattern is for two styles of Berthas which are meant to be worn over the lower necklines of Ballgown Bodices.  The pattern fits particularly well with TSB-130 Basic Ballgown Bodice and TSD-302 Girls/ Teen Party Dress. The Lace/ Fabric Bertha uses a band of fabric to which rows of ruffles and lace are sewn.  This bertha drapes well over the shoulders.  It is easy to construct and fit. The Square Bertha is made on a patterned foundation and requires a little more construction.  It is a wonderful Bertha to use if you want to give the illusion of a square neckline.  This is a great project to show off your needlework and crafting skills.  Either of these Bertha’s can be as simple or as fancy as desired.  The look is up to your choice of ribbons, fabrics, laces and trims.                    TSB131………..$8.00

Two-tiered Tea Dress
Timeless Stitches

The Two-Tiered Tea Dress is a combination of a modified V-necked bodice with tiered pagoda sleeves and a two-tiered skirt.  The bodice has “revers” or lapels at the neck. The bodice is fitted to the body using vertical pleats from the shoulders to the waist.  The trim on the sleeves is repeated on the tiers on the skirt to give the combination an “ensemble” look.  This is a style that would have been worn by women of all ages, with the older women using darker colors and little or no trim.  The Bodice has many of the features key to the Era:    long shoulder seams fall towards the back  of the shoulder and side seams are  towards  the back,  bodice fastened in the center front ,       armseye shaped to appear diagonal and sewn  with piping   sleeves are full at the elbow       the back is cut in a princess line and accented  with piping  The skirt has a built in “Medici Belt” , which is very comfortable to wear and eliminates the need to bone the bodice. Pelerine Cloak

Timeless Stitches
A cloak is a must for all re-enactors.  This is not your usual cloak pattern.  This cloak offers an alternative to the plain, straight hemmed cloaks that are seen at all re-enactments.  This pattern is for a cloak with an attached Pelerine or small cape at the neck. This cloak has angular lines which fall to a point in the center back.  The pattern can be made with or without a pleated ruffle around the pelerine.    This cloak is mid-length which helps to keep it from dragging on the floor and in the dirt which is very important if your cloak is made of wool. Dry-cleaning is expensive!  I have not put arm slits in the pattern, as experience has taught me the only thing they are good for is letting in the cold air.  This cloak does not include a hood, as bonnets were usually worn.  An optional hood pattern (Timeless Stitches  TSO-503 Hood)  is available if a hood is desired.  Complimentary Patterns:    The Pelerine Cloak can be combined with any of the Timeless Stitches skirt patterns (try TSS-103 The Gored Skirt) to make a very comfortable outfit, add a Sleeveless Jacket (Timeless Stitches TSB-111) for a complete look.

Summer Capellette

Timeless Stitches
The name for this garment comes from Le Beau Monde, a French magazine, popular at the time.  The Spring 1862 edition described a “summer capellette made of silk or gauze” that would “make a delightful addition to every young ladies wardrobe.”  I liked the name so much I chose to use it for this pattern. Peterson’s Magazine of October 1863 describes, “ circular mantles have been lately introduced and are finding great favor” and “Every maker gives them a distinctive character by variety of trimming, and sometimes a new name, but they are in reality the same article.”  This pattern is for a very lightweight unlined cape, that is meant to be trimmed with lace or ruffles.  The capellette gets its light airy qualities from your choice of fabric and trims.  The garment closes in the front with self-fabric ties or ribbon.  Other methods of closures may be used such as hook and eyes or a loop and button.  This garment is meant to be worn on those warm summer days when fashion dictates women wear an outer garment but the weather says “ too hot!”  This capellette will work as a covering for a low-necked bodice to extend its wearing into the afternoon.  A capellette of the same fabric as your skirt and bodice would nicely round out an outfit and create an extra “look”.  This pattern would be a compliment to any of Timeless Stitches bodice patterns. It would soften the tailored lines of the Fitted Bodice TSB-100, and combined with the Sleeveless Jacket TSB-111 and a Gored Skirt TSS-203 would make a wonderful outfit.  The capellette would also make a wonderful topper for the Teen Party Dress TSD-302.   The capellette is a one size fits most garment, suitable for girls from 14 years old and all ladies.

Sleeve Jockeys and Cuffs

Timeless Stitches
Sleeve Jockeys are one of the most known and common of the accessories worn by women of the Era.  Used not only for their looks but also to help protect the clothing from soil and wear, it was much easier to launder a pair of cuffs or sleeve jockeys than to wash a complete bodice.  Chemisettes, collars, sleeve jockeys and cuffs were often made in sets with similar style trimming.  Not only did this give a very “put together’ look, but it also helped to enhance the illusion that a complete body was being worn, when in fact it was just matching accessories       This pattern is designed so that you can mix and match your sleeves and cuffs to get many different results.  Some simple embroidery designs and fabric trimming methods are included with this pattern.

Chemisettes & Collars

Timeless Stitches
This pattern is for a button-front “dickie” called a chemisette.  These garments were used to help fill in the neckline of dresses with a square or lower neckline, allowing the wearer to extend the purposes of her garments.  A great consideration is the fact that the chemisette can be easily changed, freshening up an outfit.  It is much easier to launder the chemisette or collar than the whole garment.   Chemisettes can also be worn under a bodice or jacket to give the impression of a body underneath, for this reason most chemisettes had matching sleeve jockeys trimmed in the same style     Some simple embroidery designs and the instructions from Godey’s for a knitted chemisette are also included in this pattern.
