French Cheesemaker's Smock

The traditional smock worn by cheesemakers in Roquefort, France, falls in gathers from a band collar with a one-button front placket closing.  Sleeves are gathered at the wrist into a buttoned band cuff.   Shoulder yokes and an underarm gusset complete the typical construction.    This pattern adjusts to fit both men and women.

Japanese Hapi and Haori

Japanese clothing is characterized by elegance and simplicity, as is perfectly illustrated by these two outer garments.   The haori, although traditionally worn on formal occasions by men, in sow most often seen on women layered over a kimono for street wear.  The hapi is a shopcoat worn by storekeepers, craftsmen, and firemen over western-style clothes and is sized for both men and women. A pattern for the tabi - fabric slipper-socks traditionally worn with sandals - is also included.

Seminole Jacket and Skirt

Since the early 1700s the Seminole Indians of Florida have been experimenting with the brightly colored fabrics first brought to them by European traders.

This pattern includes a blouson-style jacket worn by Seminole men since the 1940's (sized for men and women) and a simple dirndl skirt with dust ruffle for women. Authentic Seminole patchwork detailing are in this pattern.

Worn by herdsmen in Hungary as far back as the Middle Ages, the Szur is a dramatic, mid-calf length coat worn over the shoulders as a cape.  It fastens just below the neckline with a decorated buckle.  The Szur is traditionally made of wool felt with the sleeves sewn together at the wrist and used as pockets.  The large lapels and broad collar may be lavishly decorated with embroidery or appliqué.

The English Smock

English Smocks were most widely worn during the elate 18th C.  Shepherds donned the sturdy garments while tending their flocks; carters and wagoneers  used them a dustcoats while traveling unpaved roads.   Butchers, bakers, fishmongers, and farmers wore smocks for work, and many had "best" smocks (usually white) as well, for Sundays, special occasions, and to make a good impression at the annual Hiring Fairs.  Today, smocks are favored by artists, craftspeople, and fashionable folk everywhere.   Instructions and designs for smocking and embroidery are included inside pattern.

Australian Bush Outfit

This Australian Bush Outfit (c.1943-1953) has its origins in British Colonial history, when regiments stationed in tropical or desert climates required functional, light-weight uniforms.  Over the years, the functional aspects remained; design changes reflected only current fashion trends.   Bush Jacket, Trousers and Walking Shorts are sized for men; women's equivalent sizes are provided for a man-tailored fit.  Also included is a diagram for an authentic "Slingeroo: - the Australian shoulder bag.

The Moroccan Burnoose

Men of the Maghreb (Western North Africa from Tunisia to Morocco) wrap themselves in these graceful sweeping capes year round.   Made of black, brown or white camel hair woven into rough homespun of the finest broadcloth, the Burnoose lends protection from mountain winds and desert sun.  Worn by Berber tribesmen over loose tunics and pants and by urban executives in Casa Blanca over business suits and ties, it offers endless possibilities for wrapping and draping (and even for stashing one's belongings in the hood, like a backpack.  Authentic detailing in packet.

  Jewels of India

These are among the most basic garments of India, a land of staggering diversity of peoples and dress.  Men in all walks of life and for all occasions wear the Kurta shirt in fabrics ranging from lawn to silks in all weights.  The Kamiz tunic is worn by women in Northern India over narrow Churidar pants.  Since 1947, when India became independent, the cloth "Gandhi cap" has been a important accessory of national dress.

Adapted from the traditional Egyptian Galabia (man's robe), this versatile shirt may be made for casual or elegant occasions for either men or women.  The original garments are ankle length and unadorned; we offer a modern shirt-length version that may be left plain or decorated with contrasting yoke, appliqué, or soutache braid in typical designs, and/or handmade cording and knotted buttons. Instructions for optional handwork are included in the pattern as well as suggested fabric layouts to make the long galabia.
