Afghani Nomad Dress

The women of nomadic tribes in Afghanistan wear this extremely full-skirted above-ankle-length dress.  The tight high-waisted bodice with an opening in the back, is connected by a front waistband and underarm gussets to the skirt and to the full three-piece sleeves.  Exotically romantic as a party or wedding dress.

Nepali Blouse
Misses Extra Small to Extra Large  
In Nepal, this wrap-and-tie blouse is traditionally made of velvet and worn under a wrap-style chupa or jumper (like our #131 Tibetan Chupa) or over a wrapped and pleated skirt formed from a sari or length of fabric. The semi-fitted blouse features a wide band collar, tapered sleeves, and deep underarm gussets for ease of movement. Pattern includes directions for wrapping and pleating a companion skirt. Suggested fabrics: Lightweight fabrics with drape such as rayon, velvet, or silk; medium-weight cotton; lightweight wool. Traditional colors are shades of red, pink, or purple.

Vietnamese Ao Dai

  
Misses Extra Small to Extra Large.   
This feminine ensemble of flowing Tunic and wide-legged pants is considered the traditional costume of Vietnam. The easy-sew Tunic features front and back waist shaping darts, mandarin collar, front neckline/armhole opening, tapered long sleeves with elbow darts, and long free-hanging front and back panels. The Pants have an easy full-legged fit, center back zipper, and faced waistline. Suggested fabrics: Lightweight, drapey fabrics such as silk, polyester, or cotton gauze for Tunic and/or Pants; also embroidered brocade for Tunic. Ao Dai pants are typically white; the Tunic can be plain white, a plain or patterned color, or the traditional red and gold for a wedding garment.

Japanese Hakama & Kataginu

  
Hakama for men and women, all sizes based on waist measurement.    Kataginu in one size 
During the Edo period in Japan (1615-1868), members of the samurai or warrior class wore the Kamishimo, a traditional costume made up of the Kataginu or pleated-front vest and Hakama or pleated pants/skirt. The two garments were typically worn over a knee-length kimono for formal occasions. Today, the garments are frequently worn for official occasions, martial arts, and historic reenactment.         This pattern gives you complete instructions for cutting and pleating the traditional Hakama in any size and includes pattern pieces for Small, Medium-Large, and Sumo-Size Koshiita (Backboard) and Koshiita Triangles. For contemporary sportswear, pattern also includes instructions for optional side panels to fill in the side-seam gaps that expose the underlying kimono in traditional wear.  The wide-shoulder Kataginu can be made to match the Hakama for a traditional samurai appearance or as a contrasting wearable art accent. Easy to pleat and sew, it completes a dramatic outfit.   Suggested Fabrics  For Kataginu: Crisp, tightly woven cottons; linens and linen blends; ramie; hemp; silks, including shantung, habotae, pongee, satin, or taffeta. Note: You may have to starch fabric to preserve pleats. For Hakama: Same as Kataginu, but also lightweight wool suiting.

A traditional fashion worn by peasants, farmers, and shepherds in the Pannonian Basin of old Yugoslavia. Originally made from homespun linen, but elegant in cotton, silk, and sheers. The Korean Han-Bok is a traditional costume of Korea.   It is composed of two garments: the choigori (short jacket) and the chima (full dress).  The simple to sew dress is pleated to a band above the bust, wraps in back, and ties in front.  The jacket is an enchantingly different garment, with elegantly shaped sleeves, wide cuff bands and narrow ribbon trim along the neckline.

Gaza Dress

This is an exact duplicate of the garment worn for centuries by village women in Gaza.  The loose-fitting ankle-length dress has long sleeves, slightly narrowed at the wrists, three side panels on each side, shoulder and front yokes, and front slit opening.  Two optional embroidery designs are included for the front yoke, as well as suggestions for other authentic decorations.   This pattern adjusts to fit sizes 6-18.

Romanian Blouse

The Romanian blouse has a gathered neckline, underarm gussets and sleeves that can be worn 3/4 length with a self-formed ruffled cuff, gathered at the wrist or hanging loose.  Optional designs and instructions are included for embroidery of the sleeves and front of blouse, smocking at neck and wrists, crocheted edges for neckline and wrists, and for sewing the entire blouse by hand using insertion stitch and decorative hem stitching.   One size fits all 6-16

Syrian Dress

 Chinese Jacket

The origins of this classically elegant jacket, worn today by Chinese people throughout the world on festive occasions, may be traced back 4,000 years.  Lavishly decorated lined robes of silk, satin, or gauze were worn by the wealthy over matching skirts or trousers.  This jacket was adopted at all levels of Chinese society, often in indigo-dyed cotton for everyday wear.

Beautiful long pleated wrap skirts of richly decorated silk were worn by Chinese women, perhaps as early as 200 B. C., and later in the Imperial Court of the Chin Dynasty (1644-1911),  Worn over loose trousers, a matching jacket or robe of silk or satin completed the traditional costume.

Tibetan Panel Coat

This ancient full length vest or sleeveless coat may still be seen worn by Tibetans today on festive occasions, by brides, and by actors portraying celestial beings in sacred plays.   Traditionally constructed of simple contrasting panels of hand-woven work, rectangular solid color panels alternate with horizontal striped wedge-shaped panels, creating an overlap front opening.    Women sizes S, M, and L included in one packet.

Navajo Blouse and Skirt

The brightly colored velvet blouses of Navajo women and girls date back to the 1870's when machine woven textiles were first brought to the newly established trading posts.  This snugly fitting pullover blouse is typically lined with calico and worn over a voluminously gathered and tiered skirt.   A Navajo tiered skirt design in diagram form with historical notes is included.

Austrian Dirndl

The Dirndl dates back to the Renaissance and is one of the few regional costumes still worn extensively in Austria, Southern Germany and Switzerland.  The complete Dirndl consists of a close fitting sleeveless bodice with attached full skirt over an abbreviated white blouse finished with a contrasting apron.  Easy to make decorative runching may be used to enhance the lines of the bodice.   Women's sizes 8-16 included.

Bolivian Milkmaid's Jacket

These short Jackets worn today by women of the Altiplano in Bolivia are reminiscent of Spanish costume at the time of the Conquistadors.  The originals are made of bright colored velvet and trimmed with crystal beading and narrow braid, with close fitting lines and full sleeves perfectly adapted to the current silhouette.  Ladies sizes 8-14

Huichol Wardrobe

Japanese Hapi and Haori

Japanese clothing is characterized by elegance and simplicity, as is perfectly illustrated by these two outer garments.   The haori, although traditionally worn on formal occasions by men, in sow most often seen on women layered over a kimono for street wear.  The hapi is a shopcoat worn by storekeepers, craftsmen, and firemen over western-style clothes and is sized for both men and women. A pattern for the tabi - fabric slipper-socks traditionally worn with sandals - is also included.

Seminole Jacket and Skirt

Since the early 1700s the Seminole Indians of Florida have been experimenting with the brightly colored fabrics first brought to them by European traders.

This pattern includes a blouson-style jacket worn by Seminole men since the 1940's (sized for men and women) and a simple dirndl skirt with dust ruffle for women. Authentic Seminole patchwork detailing are in this pattern.

The Hungarian Szur

Worn by herdsmen in Hungary as far back as the Middle Ages, the Szur is a dramatic, mid-calf length coat worn over the shoulders as a cape.  It fastens just below the neckline with a decorated buckle.  The Szur is traditionally made of wool felt with the sleeves sewn together at the wrist and used as pockets.  The large lapels and broad collar may be lavishly decorated with embroidery or appliqué.

The English Smock

English Smocks were most widely worn during the late 18th C.  Shepherds donned the sturdy garments while tending their flocks; carters and wagoneers  used them a dustcoats while traveling unpaved roads.   Butchers, bakers, fishmongers, and farmers wore smocks for work, and many had "best" smocks (usually white) as well, for Sundays, special occasions, and to make a good impression at the annual Hiring Fairs.  Today, smocks are favored by artists, craftspeople, and fashionable folk everywhere.   Instructions and designs for smocking and embroidery are included inside pattern.

Australian Bush Outfit

This Australian Bush Outfit (c.1943-1953) has its origins in British Colonial history, when regiments stationed in tropical or desert climates required functional, light-weight uniforms.  Over the years, the functional aspects remained; design changes reflected only current fashion trends.   Bush Jacket, Trousers and Walking Shorts are sized for men; women's equivalent sizes are provided for a man-tailored fit.  Also included is a diagram for an authentic "Slingeroo: - the Australian shoulder bag.

Men of the Maghreb (Western North Africa from Tunisia to Morocco) wrap themselves in these graceful sweeping capes year round.   Made of black, brown or white camel hair woven into rough homespun of the finest broadcloth, the Burnoose lends protection from mountain winds and desert sun.  Worn by Berber tribesmen over loose tunics and pants and by urban executives in Casa Blanca over business suits and ties, it offers endless possibilities for wrapping and draping (and even for stashing one's belongings in the hood, like a backpack.  Authentic detailing in packet.

  Jewels of India

These are among the most basic garments of India, a land of staggering diversity of peoples and dress.  Men in all walks of life and for all occasions wear the Kurta shirt in fabrics ranging from lawn to silks in all weights.  The Kamiz tunic is worn by women in Northern India over narrow Churidar pants.  Since 1947, when India became independent, the cloth "Gandhi cap" has been a important accessory of national dress.

  Kinsale Cloak

Rural Irish folk for centuries wore voluminous full-length woolen cloaks of ancient origins.  Hand-woven in a straight twilled tweed, these heavy cloaks took their color from the native black sheep, whose wool provided a natural water repellent.  The social changes wrought by the Potato Famine of 1846 saw a decline in the cloak's popularity; however, lined with black linen, silk, or satin it may still be seen in West County Cork today.
