1878 Sack Suit

from Patterns of History

The pattern for this three-piece suit is based on an 1878 drafting system created by J.O. Madison and an 1870s suit in the Wisconsin Historical Society’s costume collection. According to contemporary sources, men wore sack suits for traveling, business, and morning wear on the street.  Package includes patterns for a coat, vest and pants.  Sizes: Small (38-40-42) Large (44-46-48)

1870s-1901 One Piece Apron Front Overalls

In the Historical Notes included with this pattern, Past Patterns introduces you to never before published images and documentation. Past Patterns traces apron front (bib) overalls from 1838 to 1901 using art, daguerreotypes, original 19th century apron front overalls, pattern drafting manuals, mail order and wholesale catalogs and United States government documents.

The pattern is multi-sized, waist 32-52. In 45" wide fabric, waist size 32 requires 2-7/8 Yds.; waist size 36 requires 3-1/8 Yds.; waist size 40 requires 3-1/4 Yds.; waist size 44 requires 3-1/3 Yds.; waist size 48 requires 3-3/8 Yds.; waist size 52 requires 3-1/2 Yds.

All shirts have a back yoke, shaped armholes and long sleeves.  View A is an informal or work shirt with a front placket opening with attached cuffs and the choice of 5 different attached collars.  Viet B is a dress shirt with a shield shaped front opening bosom with attached neckband and wristband and is worn with detachable collars and cuffs.  Viet C is a dress shirt with a rectangular plain, 3, or 4 pleated bosom, opens front and back (optional) and is also worn with detachable collars and cuffs.  The dress shirts have 7 different detachable collars and 4 different detachable cuff choices.  14 different choices of period neckwear are also included.  Chest sizes 32 to 56 are included in the same package.

Countryside Frock Coat

This traditional coat has been a versatile fashion through the ages.  It was worn for casual outdoor activities in the English countryside in the 1700s, for formal dress or dress fashion in the early 1800s and for business wear until World War I in the early 1900s. Men's sizes XS to XXL and women's sizes XS to XL.

Vintage Vests

In Victorian times, gentlemen were not considered properly dressed without jacket, vest (waistcoat), and tie.  Indeed, even smart Victorian women donned fitted vests for street wear, with walking skirts and long jackets.  Sizes Misses 6-16 and Mens 36-44 all in one packet.

Men's Frock Coat and Vest

The Frock and Vest A are exact copies of an antique frock and matching vest circa 1880. Vest B is a copy of a vest circa 1850. The silhouette of all garments are appropriate for the time period 1850-1915. 

The Frock Coat is double breasted and can be buttoned on either side. The silk lining shows at the notched collar. It has tails at the back open to the waist and has inside pockets in both breast and in the tails.

Vest A has a notched collar and four welt pockets on the outside and two inside pockets at the breast. The collar is “laid on” and does not go all the way around the back of the neck.

Vest B has a shawl collar and two welt pockets. View B’s collar goes all the way around the back of the neck. The back of both vests has a cinch belt.

Sizes 34-58 all included in the envelope.

This is a semi-fitted jacket with trousers of contrasting fabric.  The jacket features three pockets and can be lined or unlined.  The trousers are of moderate width in cut.  The shirt features a back yoke with gathered lower bodice. The moderately  high collar is rounded, as are the cuffs.  Both collar and cuffs are detachable.

1890 Evening Suit

This is a fitted suit with front lapel extensions of a constrasting fabric.  The frock coat sweeps into tails that are curved away from the body with a double pleat in the center back.  The shirt features a yoke in the back and small gathers in the front at the shoulders.  The collar is moderately high and split in the center front.

1800-1890s Men's Drawers

from Past Patterns

The short drawers can be worn under breeches. The long drawers are typical of those worn during the 1860s through the turn of the century.

The original fabric of the ankle length drawers is a medium weight cotton sheeting. The short drawers are a linen twill 

The pattern is multi-sized waist 28-42. All sizes of the long drawers require 3-1/4 Yds. of 45 inch wide cotton sheeting. Sizes 32-36 for the short drawers require 2-1/8 Yds. of 45 inch wide linen twill; sizes 38-42 require 2-3/8 Yds. of 45 inch wide linen twill.
